GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a FLSA exempt position, OSHA high-risk position, and an ADA negotiable position. The Dentist works as part of the Patient Care Team to provide professional, team based dental care. Under supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Dentist plays a critical role in the delivery of quality, patient- centered dental care within the context of a federally qualified community health center (FQHC). The Dentist provides leadership in all areas relating to the clinical operation of the dental clinic and is responsible for recommending and implementing policies and procedures, supervising the dental support staff in their duties, ensuring continuous quality improvement in all patient care activities, and acting as an integral part of the management team of the dental office.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Communicates with patients and visitors in a courteous and professional manner and addresses questions and needs with sensitivity to patient confidentiality, cultural diversity, and individualized requirements for assistance.
Willingly cooperates and shares information, knowledge, and expertise in carrying out the objectives of the Patient Care Team.
Addresses patient concerns and assists patients with conflict and problem resolution.
Takes initiative and accepts accountability as a patient advocate and promotes patient satisfaction.
Develops a plan of care for each patient, including complete dental history, examination, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment and referral.
Evaluate, diagnose, prevent and/or treat diseases, disorders/or conditions of the oral cavity.
Examines patient to determine nature of condition, utilizing x-rays, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures.
Stresses the importance of preventative dental care measures and serves as a patient educator.
Refers cases that require specialist services, while ensuring that continuity of care is provided.
Collaborates with the dental support staff and front office staff and utilizes the EMR modules to monitor, prioritize, and ensure a smooth patient flow with minimal wait times.
Documents all clinical activities and patient interactions in electronic health record.
Organizes the dental support staff and resources in carrying out the dental program.
Performs supervisory duties for dental support staff to include time management, and performance evaluation.
Participates with CEO and CMO to provide input to management regarding dental operations.
Coordinates with the Office Manager regarding the administrative activities of the dental site.
Performs other necessary duties as required by the CMO to meet the needs of the care team in the delivery of primary healthcare services.

Participates in the organizations performance improvement activities and performs duties in accordance with applicable standards.

Monitors Quality Control.
Serves on committees related to safety, risk management/quality improvement as requested.

Attends provider meetings and staff meetings as scheduled.
Participates in quarterly peer review activities.
SAFETY AND INFECTION CONTROL ACTIVITIES
Ensures an appropriate environment for the administration of healthcare by maintaining supervision of the environment of care including exam rooms, patient areas, equipment, and other work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly fashion.
Assumes personal responsibility for Infection Control and Bloodborne Pathogen precautions to protect patients, staff, visitors, and self from risk of exposure.
TEAM BASED CARE MODEL
Participates in daily team meetings to communicate and collaborate on patient needs.
Oversees the Dental care team, and participates in quality care activities, to include pre-visit planning, participating in ensuring compliance with quality measures, and other initiatives.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Dentist reports to and is supervised by the CMO. Supervises dental support staff to include Dental Hygienist, and Dental Assistants. Provides leadership and guidance to all dental staff.
EVALUATION
The evaluation of work performance will be on-going, will be carried out by the CMO and will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitudes and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually but may be initiated at other times by the CMO. Participates in peer review “360” feedback for evaluations as requested. Performs annual performance evaluations for supervised staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Must be licensed with Virginia Board of Dentistry.
Must have Sufficient experience and skills necessary to perform the duties of this position.
Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques.
Ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to staff, patients, and other providers.
